Beware of the cat !

Today's podcast is about taking care!

I want you to imagine that you are visiting England. You and some friends decide to go for a walk in the country. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and all is right with the world. You walk through a pretty village, and then through a wood. You climb over a fence into a big field. “This would be a good place for a picnic,” you say. So you sit down on the grass under a tree, and unpack your picnic.

Then your friend sees something. “There is a notice on the fence over there,” he says. “can you read what it says?”

You look hard at the notice. You can hardly see the writing. “I think it says – beware of the bull!” you say. “What does ‘beware' mean?”

You find your English dictionary at the bottom of your rucksack, You have just started to look for ‘beware' when you hear a snorting noise. You look up to see a large bull standing about 10 metres away.

Now, some bulls are kind and “hospitable“. They are pleased when visitors come to their field, and they try to make them welcome. One look at this bull, however, tells you that this is not the kind and hospitable sort of bull. He is, rather, the unkind and inhospitable sort of bull. There is only one thing to do. You and your friend run to the fence and climb over it. The bull runs after you, snorting angrily. He stares at you for a few minutes; then he goes back to the tree where you were sitting and starts to eat your picnic.

Now you know what “beware” means. It means “danger! be careful!” “Beware” is actually a shortened form of “be aware”. You can use “beware” as an imperative verb – that means, a verb which gives orders or instructions. You can tell somebody “beware of the bull” or “beware of the dog”. But you cannot say “I beware of the bull” or “you beware of the the dog.” So, “beware” is an incomplete verb – you can only use it to warn someone to be careful.

You will often see “beware” on notices that warn people about dangers. Near a railway line, there might be a notice “Beware of the trains”. Beside a river – “beware – deep water”. Or near a road junction – “beware of traffic from the right”.

And here are some other words or phrases which you can use to tell somebody that something may be dangerous.

danger!
warning!
caution!
be careful!
look out!
take care!
mind out!

There is a little quiz on the website about warning notices and the places where you might find them. Take care!

Halloween. October 31

Halloween (All Hallows Evening или Beggars Night) — Хэллоуинночь перед Днем всех святых (All Saints' Day).

"Since You've Been Gone"

search and you will find there is no reason
I can't convince myself to let you go
I never promised you it would be easy
it seems to me that nothing's fair in love

since you've been gone
baby you've been on my mind
since you've been gone, how can I go on
since you've been out of my life
baby since you've been gone
I guess that I should be alright
since you've been gone, how can I go on
since you've been out of my life

I'm not so sure this is the right decision
I still believe that we can find a way
girl why can't you see how much I miss you
I'd wish you would come back to me and stay

since you've been gone
baby you've been on my mind
since you've been gone, how can I go on
since you've been out of my life
baby since you've been gone
I guess that I should be alright
since you've been gone, how can I go on
since you've been out of my life

since you've been gone
I can do what I want
I can go anywhere
because now nobody cares
since you've been gone
I can hear all the songs on "kill 'em all"
but I feel so alone
all I want is to turn you around back home

since you've been gone
baby you've been on my mind
since you've been gone, how can I go on
since you've been out of my life
baby since you've been gone
I guess that I should be alright
since you've been gone, how can I go on
since you've been out of my life

May, 29 - Last Bell Day. Examinations are coming.

Satellite, Eurovision 2010 Song Contest Winner

I went everywhere for you
I even did my hair for you
I bought new underwear, light blue
And I wore 'em just the other day

Love you, know I'll fight for you
I left on the porch light for you
Whether you are sweet or cruel
I'm gonna love you either way

Love, oh love, I gotta tell you how I feel about you
'Cause I, oh I, can't go a minute without your love
Like a satellite, I'm in orbit all the way around you
And I would fall out into the night
Can't go a minute without your love

Love, I got it bad for you
I saved the best I have for you
You sometimes make me sad and blue
Wouldn't have it any other way

Love, my aim is straight and true
Cupid's arrow is just for you
I even painted my toe nails for you
I did it just the other day

Love, oh love, I gotta tell you how I feel about you
'Cause I, oh I, can't go a minute without your love
Like a satellite, I'm in orbit all the way around you
And I would fall out into the night
Can't go a minute without your...
Love, oh love, I gotta tell you how I feel about you
'Cause I, oh I, can't go a minute without your love

Where you go, I'll follow
You set the pace, we'll take it fast and slow
I'll follow in your way
You got me, you got me
A force more powerful than gravity
It's physics, there's no escape

Love, my aim is straight and true
Cupid's arrow is just for you
I even painted my toe nails for you
I did it just the other day

Love, oh love, I gotta tell you how I feel about you
'Cause I, oh I, can't go a minute without your love
Like a satellite, I'm in orbit all the way around you
And I would fall out into the night
Can't go a minute without your...
Love, oh love, I gotta tell you how I feel about you
'Cause I, oh I, can't go a minute without your love

Easter Day

This year Easter Day is on 4 April 2010
What happens on Easter Sunday today?
Christians gather together on Easter Sunday for a Sunrise Service. This service takes place on a hill side so everyone can see the sun rise.
Some Christians take part in an Easter vigil, lighting a new fire outside the church early on Sunday morning. The Paschal candle, decorated with studs to celebrate Christ's wounds, may be lit from the fire and carried into the church where it is used to light the candles of the worshippers. The Easter Eucharist is a particularly joyful service. It is a popular time for baptisms and renewal of baptism vows.
Some churches have an Easter Garden. A stone is placed across the mouth of a tomb before Easter, then rolled away on Easter morning.
The traditional Easter gift is a chocolate egg.
The Traditional Egg Gift
The first eggs given at Easter were birds eggs. These eggs were painted in bright colours to give them further meaning as a gift.
As chocolate became more wide spread in the 20th Century, a chocolate version of the traditional painted egg was developed. The size of the chocolate egg has grown over the years and is now more likely to be the size of an ostrich egg rather than a small birds egg

For you to know about the Eastern Orthodox Church

The Eastern Orthodox Church is a Christian church. Their type of Christianity is also called Eastern Orthodoxy. Their members are called Eastern Orthodox, although there is another group of Churches called Oriental Orthodox that is not Eastern Orthodox. There are about 250 million Eastern Orthodox in the world. Most Eastern Orthodox are found in Russia, Greece, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, but there are Eastern Orthodox everywhere in the world.
Eastern Orthodox believe in everything in the Nicene Creed:
I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages.
Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten not created, of one essence with the Father through whom all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man.
He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and he suffered and was buried.
On the third day he rose according to the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and dead. His kingdom will have no end.
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who together with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke through the prophets.
In One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.
I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
I expect the resurrection of the dead.
And the life of the ages to come. Amen.

Palm Sunday

Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey, early 1900's Bible
card illustration Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast
which always falls on the Sunday before Easter Sunday.:
the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem in the days
before his Passion. It is also called Passion Sunday or Palm
Sunday of the Lord's Passion.
In many Christian churches, Palm Sunday is marked by
the distribution of palm leaves (often tied into crosses)
to the assembled worshipers. The difficulty of procuring
palms for that day's ceremonies in unfavorable climates
for palms led to the substitution of boughs of box, yew,
willow or other native trees. The Sunday was often
designated by the names of these trees, as Yew
Sunday or by the general term Branch Sunday.
